Turkey’s relations with France throughout history have had many ups and downs. There are numerous linkages between these two countries that are not always adequately articulated. For instance, one of the greatest French thinkers was Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Did you know that Rousseau’s father was looking after the Ottoman palace’s clocks in the Sublime Porte? Indeed, from 1705 to 1711 Rousseau’s father, Isaac Rousseau, who was a watchmaker, served the Ottoman sultan in Istanbul. Turkey and (...)
If anything shows the rise of Istanbul as a cultural power, it is its art biennial, which opened this month and runs until 13 November. Fiachra Gibbons selects some of the highlights
Twenty years ago it was nowhere; now Istanbul is up there with Venice and São Paulo as the art biennials that matter. Istanbul’s rapid rise has been fuelled by the extraordinary generosity of a handful of patrons in a country where traditionally artists could rely on nothing but censure. The latest of the city’s (...)

Last Monday the prosecutor read out his final opinion in the Hrant Dink case, meaning the case has approached its final stages. Basically, the prosecutor said that the Trabzon cell of the Ergenekon terrorist organization carried out this murder. But he also said that he is unable to establish concrete links between Ergenekon and Dink’s murderers. We can interpret his remarks as a confession of a failure to identify the real perpetrators of this murder. However, in spite of this failure, he (...)
Bora Bayraktar, euronews :
Tout d’abord, je souhaiterai vous (...)
Turkish government leaders have made reducing the military’s role in politics one of their top domestic priorities. But there is one area where the politicians appear reluctant to confront the generals – providing draft exemptions for conscientious objectors.
Turkish law requires males between the ages of 20-41 to serve in the military; six months for university graduates, 15 months otherwise. The European Court of Human Rights and European Commission have pressed Ankara to recognize (...)
In a recent statement to journalists, President Abdullah Gül said: “You know, I assigned the State Audit Institution [DDK] to investigate the Hrant Dink and Muhsin Yazıcıoğlu cases. The agency has found some sad things in regards to the Yazıcıoğlu case. I mean, it is unbelievable, but the flight recorder of the chopper that crashed is gone. Well, the goats didn’t take it. It was removed from its place with screwdrivers and is now missing. Later, we received much information. One person wrote the (...)
