Analysts have said the gradually shrinking public support for opposition parties is a serious threat to Turkish democracy, which recently received a serious blow from a closure case against the country’s ruling party. Pointing to a recent opinion poll on the current political situation in Turkey showing that the opposition parties continue to suffer from declining popularity with the public, analysts stressed that Turkish democracy is heading in a dangerous direction as a democracy (...)
French President Nicolas Sarkozy and European Union Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn have praised President Abdullah Gül’s visit to Armenia to watch a World Cup qualifying match between the national teams of the two countries. Sarkozy welcomed the visit, the first ever by a Turkish president since Armenia became independent in 1991, as “courageous and historic.”
Sarkozy, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the European Union, said in a statement on Saturday: "While the region (...)
Mental occupation is the worst of all occupations. Territorial occupation hits the territories occupied and their inhabitants. Mental occupation hits the interlocutors of all communications created by the occupied mind. Territorial occupation creates its own resistance; the dynamics that will bring its end are part of its own definition. Mental occupation reproduces itself through resistance to it. It uses the energy of its enemies, of the freedom fighters. Territorial occupation usurps (...)
The government has been given a new lease on life, Turkey has a new national program mapping the EU-required reforms it aims to introduce, and opinion polls show that popular support for the EU project is rising.
Why then is the optimism so muted and so few people expressing faith in the government’s ability to push its program through?
Everywhere I go, I hear skeptical assessments of the Justice and Development Party’s (AK Party) willingness to introduce meaningful change. Work is of (...)
Turkish President Abdullah Gül is preparing to go to Yerevan with hopes of a breakthrough in frozen relations with Armenia. The two countries have no official diplomatic ties, and whether the visit will open the way to a normalization of relations, depends on how the Turkish President is received in Yerevan. Armenian President Serge Sarkisian’s invitation to watch the football game next Saturday was a gesture of good-will, rather than part of a careful strategy, in the eyes of Turkish (...)
As I was writing this piece President Abdullah Gül’s visit to Armenia had not been confirmed. By leaving his soft and balanced attitude we have witnessed lately, the Nationalist Movement Party’s, or MHP, Devlet Bahçeli was opposing Gül’s visit. Let’s be fair to him. The Republican People’s Party, or CHP, leader Deniz Baykal is the first leader who reacted against a visit to Armenia and he continues to do so. I paid a visit to Armenia in 1995, together with Esenyurt Mayor Gündüz Çapan, and my (...)
In less than a week, talks on a possible solution in Cyprus will take a serious turn. Dimitris Christofias, president of the Republic of Cyprus, and Mehmet Ali Talat, president of the breakaway Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC), will launch the essential part of the revived negotiations process as the leaders of their respective communities. The outcome of the talks are uncertain, although observers and the international community underline that it may be the last chance to (...)
